Bastianini: “It was the greatest thrill of my life!”

A dream comes true for Enea Bastianini as he secures a sensational home win at the San Marino GP.

In front of over 90,000 fans at the Gran Premio TIM di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini a thrilling Moto3™ World Championship race unfolded as six riders fought elbow to elbow with each other. Enea Bastianini had placed his Gresini Racing Team Moto3 machine on pole position and opted to run the soft front tyre in an attempt to break away early in the race. Unfortunately the young Italian was unable to do so and settled into the group for the majority of the race, waiting to strike. Despite being one of the most consistent front-runners on the Moto3™ World Championship grid, Bastianini had yet to take a win prior to Misano and his soul objective was to change this fact.

On the final lap ‘The Beast’ pounced, surprising Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Ajo) who had led the majority of the race. By a mere 0.037s Bastianini took an emotional first win at his home race, celebrating with a fabulous Italian flag haircut, similar to Valentino Rossi's in Imola back in 1998. There’s little time to celebrate for the 17 year old, as Misano will host a Moto3™ test day on Monday, straight back to work for all the riders. With 179 points, Bastianini sits second in the World Championship and reduces the gap to Danny Kent (Leopard Racing) to 55-points with six races remaining.

Enea Bastianini: “It was the greatest thrill of my life! After having missed the win so many times, to get it here in Misano, in front of all these fans, it’s a great feeling, which makes me feel satisfied. I dedicate this success to my family and my team. It’s an amazing emotion, and right now I still have to realize well what happened... We are going to celebrate tonight, but not too much because tomorrow we have a day of testing and we want to continue to work hard to try to catch Kent in the championship. This victory probably will make me even more confident: there are still five races and I think that we can recover the gap from Kent. We will fight till the end”.
