Espargaro: “We don’t deserve to be where we are”

Espargaro: “We don’t deserve to be where we are”

Uncertain weather conditions at the San Marino GP end two days of hard work in the dry for Aleix Espargaro.

For the second race in a row weather conditions played a major part in deciding the MotoGP™ race, again causing hardships for Team Suzuki Ecstar. As a returning team with a new bike dry track time is highly valuable and mixed conditions such as in the Gran Premio TIM di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini are less then ideal as the data that can be gathered is limited. Aleix Espargaro and his team of mechanics and technicians had worked tirelessly throughout the weekend and were feeling competitive in the dry, but were unable to carry their pace to Sunday when forced to change bikes multiple times due to weather.

Espargaro managed tenth in the race and gained valuable championship points but was again expecting a stronger result. Acceleration is still the Suzuki GSX-RR’s weakest area and all involved are working to find a solution. Despite a disappointing race and still having areas in which to improve, Espargaro holds 12th in the MotoGP™ World Championship standings and continues to close down his rookie teammate Maverick Viñales.

Aleix Espargaro: “I must say I am disappointed about the race, not only for the result itself but because we don’t deserve to be where we are. We are all working very hard and the classification and points are not where we should be. In the first part of the race in dry conditions I was feeling competitive, being able to fight for the positions ahead well into the top-ten, then when we had to switch the bikes for the second time and we didn’t manage the situation at its best; maybe I could have stopped a lap earlier and gained some more positions.”

“Unfortunately we still lack in performance, no need to say once more that we miss some acceleration, but we need to find a more efficient way to exploit what positives we have. Now we head to Aragon, I hope we will have a better luck there but most of all I hope that the weather will be similar to what we found in testing so that we can start from a solid base, which is what we couldn’t do in this race.”
