Iannone: “The rain tyres were ruined immediately”

A delayed second entry costs Andrea Iannone dearly in the Gran Premio TIM di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini.

The weather once again played a pivotal role in the MotoGP™ World Championship as mixed conditions during the San Marino GP turned much of the race into a lottery. Choosing when to pit became a deciding factor in Sunday’s race and a delay in swapping back to slicks saw Andrea Iannone finish a lacklustre seventh. The Ducati Team rider has learnt from the unique circumstances and is sure to pay more attention to his pit-board in future races. Iannone feels he would have been able to challenge for a better position had he not delayed his entry.

In the overall championship standings Iannone continues to hold an impressive fourth place with 159 points, beating his more experienced teammate Andrea Dovizioso and the likes of Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team). Having held multiple tests at the Misano circuit both Iannone and Ducati were expecting a stronger result but unpredictable weather ended their chances.

Andrea Iannone: “It was a very complicated race. In the early stages I was going quite well, I had enough confidence with the bike and I was trying to attack Pedrosa. When it began to rain, the situation became more difficult because it wasn’t easy to lap on slicks in those conditions on a track surface that was neither dry nor wet. When I changed bikes, the rain tyres were ruined immediately, even before the track had dried out and my bike tended to move around a lot in acceleration and was difficult to control. Unfortunately I made a mistake when it was time to switch bikes for the second time, delaying my entry too much, and probably my final result would have been different if I had decided to come in before. Next time I’ll certainly pay more attention to the pit-board, and make better use of today’s experience.”
