Antonelli: “A perfect weekend”

Antonelli: “A perfect weekend”

The 2015 season has seen Niccolo Antonelli develop into a consistent threat in Moto3™, a fact he proved again in the Japanese GP.

Fog and rain saw the Motul Grand Prix of Japan delayed by almost two hours, the Moto3™ World Championship riders getting just ten minutes of Warm Up in the wet before contesting a reduced race of 13 laps. With just ten minutes of practice in the wet at the Motegi circuit, the race was a step into the unknown for all the riders. Antonelli seized his chance; an excellent start saw the Italian lead from start to finish, repeating his Brno success.

The closing laps saw Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Ajo) rapidly close on the young Italian, but fortunately Antonelli was able to manage his advantage and took victory by 1.053s. A second win in five races boosts the Ongetta-Rivacold rider into fourth in the Moto3™ World Championship, overtaking countryman Romano Fenati (SKY Racing Team VR46). Danny Kent (Leopard Racing) leads the championship with 244 points, Antonelli is 83 points behind and thus is mathematically out of contention for the 2015 crown, but second and third are both still within his reach.

Niccolo Antonelli: “It has been an amazing win and after the victory in Brno it was important to get a confirmation in order to give continuity to results. Today I pushed from the first lap until the end, I got the gap at the beginning of the race and I managed it until the finish line. A perfect weekend, first from free practices and a great feeling with the bike. I am really happy and I thank all the team."
