Lowes quickest out of the blocks in Moto2™ FP1

Sam Lowes ends Free Practice 1 on top in mixed conditions ahead of Takaaki Nakagami and Jonas Folger.

Speed Up Racing’s Lowes managed a 1’33.658 in mixed conditions at Phillip Island to top FP1 by 0.232s. The British rider set his time with 17 minutes to go, before a rain shower brought a brief halt to proceedings. His time was still over a second off Tito Rabat’s Pole Record from 2014 (1’32.470).

When the riders returned to the track in the final few minutes, it was Idemitsu Honda Team Asia’s Takaaki Nakagami who improved to finish the session in second. AGR Team’s Jonas Folger (+0.300s) completed the provisional front row, ahead of Thomas Luthi (+0.462s) on the Derendinger Racing Interwetten Kalex in fourth.

Paginas Amarillas HP40’s Alex Rins (+0.469s) finished the session in fifth, ahead of Sandro Cortese (Dynavolt Intact GP) and the 2015 Moto2™ World Champion Johann Zarco (Ajo Motorsport) in seventh.

Lorenzo Baldassari (Forward Racing), Julian Simon (QMMF Racing Team) and Simone Corsi (Forward Racing) completed the top ten.

Italtrans Racing Team’s Franco Morbidelli was 20th on his return from the broken tibia and fibula he sustained at Silverstone. Tito Rabat (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) completed the session in 21st as he assessed his shoulder injury, while Dominique Aegerter’s replacement in the Technomag Racing Interwetten Team, Joshua Hook, was in 25th.
