Two young Australian talents join the Moto3™ World Championship in the hopes of impressing and following in the footsteps of Casey Stoner.
Wildcard rides offer a great chance for young riders to show their skills against the best of the best, their machinery may not always be up to World Championship standards but a strong ride can raise eyebrows and get people talking. Almost all of Australia’s greatest riders have wildcarded at Phillip Island in the lightweight class from Casey Stoner to Garry McCoy.
This year Olly Simpson and Matt Barton will line up alongside the likes of Danny Kent (Leopard Racing) and Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing Team Moto3) to see what they can do on the world stage. Simpson will ride a KTM with Olly Simpson Racing as he makes his second wildcard, having raced to 28th during 2014’s Australian GP. The last three years have seen Simpson battle it out in the Red Bull Rookies Cup alongside the MotoGP™ World Championship with a best race finish of third.
As one of the more experienced Rookies, many thought the Australian would be a title contender in 2015 but frequent bad luck saw him end the championship in eighth. Alongside his Red Bull Rookies commitments, the Adelaide Hills born rider has also competed in the CEV and BSB Moto3™ championships. He scored three podiums in the three BSB races he entered in 2014 including a win at Brands Hatch.
Matt Barton will ride an FTR Honda under the Suus Honda banner; the 20 year old lists Phillip Island as his favourite circuit. For years Barton’s name has been mentioned as a rising star in Australia.
