Miguel Oliveira sets the fastest time in Moto3™ Free Practice 1 ahead of Leopard Racing teammates Danny Kent and Efren Vazquez.
As riders took to the track in Australia for the first time it was Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Oliveira who reacted best to the cool conditions at Phillip Island to set a 1’37.209, just over a second off Alex Marquez’s 2014 Pole Record (1’36.050).
Leopard Racing’s Championship leader Kent, who only needs to finish in second to lift the title, was 0.210s back with his teammate Efren Vazquez (+0.667s) completing the provisional front row.
Oliveira’s teammate Brad Binder was fourth fastest (+0.882s) in a session that saw exactly a second separate the top seven. Sky Racing Team VR46’s Romano Fenati (+0.939s) was fifth with Isaac Viñales on the RBA Racing Team KTM in sixth (+0.979s) despite a crash late on in the session at turn 2.
Jakub Kornfeil (Drive M7 SIC), Karel Hanika (Red Bull KTM Ajo), Francesco Bagnaia (Mapfre Team Mahindra) and Niccolo Antonelli (Ongetta-Rivacold) completed the top ten. Antonelli, race winner last at Motegi, also crashed during the session at turn 1 but was unhurt.
Scotsman John McPhee (SAXOPRINT RTG) ended the session in 16th, with Kent’s main championship rival Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing Team Moto3) down in 18th.
Joan Mir, who is replacing the injured Hiroki Ono in the Leopard Racing team, finished in 30th.
