Oliveira: “We are just a tenth off first place”

The Moto3™ World Championship looks set to be incredibly close, Oliveira seventh and only 0.180s slower than first.

The top 26 riders in the Moto3™ World Championship were all within a second of each other during the opening day of practice at the Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana. Miguel Oliveira was only 0.180s slower than title rival Danny Kent (Leopard Racing) who led the way, but down in seventh on combiend times. With times so tight practice and Qualifying on Saturday will be critical, even a tiny mistake during Qualifying could see a rider fall off the top three rows. Despite the somewhat lowly position, Oliveira and his Red Bull KTM Ajo squad remain confident for tomorrow.

A majority of the two sessions was spent on used tyres, the Portuguese rider feeling supremely confident when the grip starts to drop. There’s a clear direction for the team to head in regards to setup on Saturday and all are confident of a stronger result. The tight layout of the Valencia circuit naturally lends itself to tight times and breaking away in the race will be difficult.

Miguel Oliveira: “In the afternoon I was much higher up on the timesheets than in the morning, I felt comfortable with used tyres and everything went pretty well. Finishing fourth in FP2 is not ideal, but we are a tenth off first place so I can’t complain too much. Today we made some changes to the bike and tomorrow we will have to do more, especially with engine braking as we are losing the most time on corner entry. The circuit lends itself to very even times, and it will be difficult to make a difference in the qualifying session, so we have to work with the team on our strategy and we hope everything goes well."
