At the recent Yamaha Team launch in Barcelona Jorge Lorenzo talked exclusively to motogp.com about the defence of his MotoGP™ title in 2016.
Jorge, after your incredible title-winning season in 2015, how are your preparations going for 2016?
“When you are World Champion you have a lot of media commitments for more or less a month and a half, so you can not train and you can not stick to your diet as you go to a lot of events with wonderful food. So you put on some kilos and you relax a little in your body and then it is difficult to start again. You have to start progressing your physical condition to achieve again a good fitness. We are doing this at the moment, and little by little we are improving my training to arrive in Qatar in the best shape.”
How do you think the technical changes for 2016 will affect the racing?
“Well a lot! We achieved the “Triple Crown” last year because the bike improved so much and this gave a lot of chance for Valentino and me to be faster than we were in the 2014 season. That is why we achieved a lot of victories, a lot of podiums, a lot of points and finished in first and second place.”
What changes are you hoping from the bike in 2016?
“Our main worry at the moment is the electronics. The electronics are much more like in the past, but it is the same for everyone. To arrive at the same level we had last year will take a lot of time and work. This is our main worry at the moment. Then, if I could ask for something from the Japanese engineers it is for an increase in top speed and power. We don’t have the most powerful engine, and if we can improve a little bit in this aspect we will be very thankful to Yamaha.”
How is your relationship with Valentino Rossi after your epic battle for the title last season?
“It should be the same as normal. When you have two teammates fighting for something as important as the MotoGP™ World Championship it is normal for the relationship to get a bit cold and feel more tension, but when the championship is finished it should be the same. I tried to be as fast as possible in the last five races of the year, I didn’t have any conflict with any rider on the track and the thing that happened with Marquez and Rossi in Sepang is their problem. They have to sort out this problem but on my part there is no problem with any rider.”
What are the chances you can make it back-to-back titles in 2016?
“It is very complicated, because it is not a sport where you only depend on yourself like swimming or athletics where you solely rely on your body. You depend on a lot of things, the bike, chassis, engine and electronics. If one of these fails then you cannot win, so let’s see how it all comes together.”
