Siegert reigns supreme in Race 1
The Moto4 Northern Cup rolled into the Sachsenring for another intense weekend of action as Robin Siegert (Kiefer Racing) enjoyed the perfect start to his home weekend, charging to Round 2 glory. It was another thrilling scrap, with Siegert defeating championship leader Anina Urlass (MASS SPORTS Racing by JRP Motorsport) by 0.093s. Thias Wenzel (ADAC Niedersachsen/ Sachsen-Anhalt) completed the podium and showed encouraging signs in Race 1.
Urlass started from pole position thanks to a 1:30.612 in qualifying. Once the lights went out, it was Wenzel who stole P1 following a lightning start, leading the pack through the opening corners. It didn’t take Siegert long to get his elbows out, either, with the front group getting to work and putting on an epic display for the German fans. There was some early drama for Jaylen Korporaal (Jaylen Korporaal Racing) as the #95 slid out at Turn 12 – ending his hopes.
Although it wasn’t the dream start for Urlass, the #21 was still in the fight, soon grabbing the lead on Lap 4. The front three stretched a comfortable margin to the remainder of the field, replicating their pace from qualifying in near-perfect racing conditions. Further back, there was also a great fight for P5 as Danny Hinkelmann (Hinkelmann DH 14 Racing) and Ruben Nijland (Team NL) traded blows.
Whilst the front trio continued to fight, there was drama for Domi Pekkanen (DPR Team), who crashed at Turn 1. Everything was building for a grand finish in Germany as Siegert led the field at the beginning of the final lap. In true Northern Cup fashion, positions weren’t decided until the final corner, where Wenzel tried an attack as Siegert held strong – snatching Race 1 victory.
Siegert held a 0.093s winning margin ahead of Urlass, who was unable to win the drag race to the line. Wenzel missed out following his late attempt at victory, with Adam Vyskocil (AV79 Racing Team) finishing a further 6.805s adrift in fourth. Nijland rounded out the top five finishers, beating Hinkelmann after their race-long battle. Anton Eilersen (ARE Racing) and Swan Emprin (SWAN96#) finished inside the top eight, whilst Casper Pennings (Casper4.racing) and Roman Durdis (FS12 Racing Team) took the final top 10 spots – building further anticipation for Sunday’s Race 2.
Siegert doubles up in Germany
It was another stunning ride for Robin Siegert, who claimed his second win of the season and the weekend at the Sachsenring. Siegert’s winning margin was just 0.062s on Sunday, proving that the Moto4 Northern Cup cannot get any closer, as Anina Urlass finished as runner-up. It was another P2 for the #21 and another opportunity for Urlass to finish ahead of former teammate Thias Wenzel, who rounded out the top three once more – bringing an unforgettable end to the weekend.
The grid went lights out for another 16-lap dash on Sunday afternoon, with Siegert securing a cracking start – leading the field through the opening lap. Wenzel, Roman Durdis and Ruben Nijland also made great starts, immediately returning to battle in a continuation of Saturday’s Race 1 action. Polesitter Urlass was pushed back to sixth on the opening lap, remaining calm before working her way through the order.
Further back, there was early drama for William Krzelj (KRZ Racing Team) as the French rider’s weekend came to an early end following a crash. A breakaway began to form with Siegert and Urlass pulling away from the chasing pack, creating daylight whilst a P3 scrap began. Involved in the battle were Wenzel, Durdis, Nijland and Danny Hinkelmann as they put on a brilliant show for the fans watching trackside.
Urlass stole the lead on Lap 7, and things would remain that way until the closing laps as Siegert put the hammer down with just two laps remaining. The move arrived at Turn 12, leaving Urlass with little time to respond in Race 2. It was another intense final lap duel, with Siegert holding on to the lead as the pair took the chequered flag – just 0.062s apart.
Siegert emerged victorious, capping off a dominant weekend with the maximum 50 points available. The German rider also took the fastest lap, beating Urlass and Wenzel, who claimed podium finishes. At the flag, Wenzel finished 0.950s clear of the group behind, with Hinkelmann and Durdis rounding out the top five runners. Elsewhere, Nijland, Adam Vyskocil and Jaylen Korporaal all claimed solid points, whilst Casper Pennings and Jason Rudolph (RacingTeam Rudolph) rounded off the top 10. Swan Emprin ran into issues on Sunday, suffering technical problems and retiring from Race 2.
