An incredible final day at the Qatar Test saw Jorge Lorenzo assert himself at the top of the MotoGP™ field.
The third and final day of the Qatar Test came to a close with Jorge Lorenzo topping the times by 0.516s, his time easily the fastest of the test as a whole. After several mixed days, the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider ends the pre-season testing period on the highest of highs, dominating over one lap and having a solid race pace. To end the test Lorenzo completed a run of 22 laps, the same distance as the Qatar race on Sunday the 20th of March. His times were consistently in the low 1’56s and this was with the harder option tyre, the 2015 MotoGP™ World Champion believed he could go even faster had the ideal soft been available.
Tyre allocation was a key talking point for many riders, but Michelin plan to bring several different options for the race. Lorenzo will now have just over a week to return to Spain and get in a few final training sessions before practice for the 2016 MotoGP™ World Championship begins at the Losail International Circuit on the 17th of March. Based on his current performance, Lorenzo will certainly be in the podium hunt and will be aiming to start 2016 better than in 2014 and 2015, where he had great difficulties in Qatar. The talking will stop when the lights go out on the 20th of March and racing returns.
Jorge Lorenzo: “It was a very positive day, because we improved our lap time a lot and we did a complete race simulation, that has been very good because I did a few laps in the 1‘55s even with not the best front tyre. With the softer one, with which you could be much faster, we had some graining. This tyre will probably not be available in the race weekend, because Michelin is planning to change its tyre allocation to one tyre that‘s a little bit harder and one that‘s not so hard as the one I used for the simulation. With the intermediate tyre on the front I could have been even faster, so I‘m happy with the fastest lap time and the simulation and we are ready to be competitive for the race.”
