After a strong showing in testing, Livio Loi picks up where he left off and tops the times in Moto3™.
Livio Loi was able to put in a lap to distinguish him from the rest of the pack with a day, or night, topping 2’05.832. This saw the RW Racing GP BV rider 0.328s ahead of second placed Joan Mir (Leopard Racing), a massive advantage for riders in the lightweight class. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Loi’s time was that he did it without a slipstream, a tow down the straight of the Losail International Circuit worth upwards of half a second. Loi has consistently been able to produce single fast laps.
The best time of the Moto3™ Qatar Test was a 2’05.444, proving that there is still speed to find for Loi and the rest of the field. ‘The Sniper’ will have to keep improving throughout the weekend if he wishes to maintain the sort of pace necessary to challenge for his second World Championship victory. Although he has started strong and has a lead over three tenths, the Moto3™ class is one where a rider can never rest easy.
Livio Loi: “We followed the upward trend. I felt good from the beginning and I knew I could be fastest again, like in the test. The gaps are close, with 18 riders within a second, but the difference between me and number 2 is three tenths of a second, and that is what satisfies me the most. I did it on my own, without a tow or someone in front of me as a target. And I did two laps of 2.05 like that. We’ve done a good job for this first day. It’s a great start and we surely want to continue like this. There may be even a bit more in it, I feel there still is room for improvement, but it depends on the conditions of the day and of the track.”
