Iannone: “I am calm and relaxed about the situation”

Andrea Iannone leaves Friday at the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar as the fastest rider in the premier class.

Topping Free Practice 2, Andrea Iannone continued to go from strength to strength as the Italian improved to a 1’54.639 to lead Free Practice 3 and the day overall. It has so far been an almost perfect start to the 2016 MotoGP™ World Championship for the Ducati Team man, cementing himself as a favourite for the race. Aside from setting the fastest time, Iannone also assessed a number of different tyre options but remains unsure as to which he will use for the race.

Aside from the new electronics, the Michelin tyres are easily the biggest change from 2016. Although riders have completed a number of race simulations and countless laps in testing, none are sure of how the French rubber will perform when the lights go out on Sunday. The opening laps are a particular enigma, many riders taking five or six laps before they feel able to push to the limit. Andrea Iannone, along with Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) were some of the only riders able to set their fastest times at the start of their runs in FP3. Being able to push immediately with confidence may allow Iannone to break away and avoid trouble come the race.

Andrea Iannone: “We finished the three free practice sessions with the best time and so for us today was a very positive day. We are working really well and our bike is going very strongly, so now we have to continue along this path and make further improvements. In FP2 we went very well with the hard tyre, then in FP3 we also tried the soft option, but it is still difficult to choose which one we will use for the race. For the moment I am calm and relaxed about the situation because also in the tests I always used the hard tyre and yesterday with the same choice of tyre we didn’t go bad at all. Tomorrow we will use the FP4 session to make the final decision.”
