For just the second time in his career Romano Fenati will start a Moto3™ race from pole, the Italian ready to fight with his rivals.
High winds and poor track conditions saw a slow start to Qualifying for the Moto3™ World Championship. As ever formation flying was crucial and Romano Fenati went out with his SKY Racing Team VR46 teammates not only for a slipstream, but also to help clean the track quicker. While trying to set a banker lap, Fenati made two mistakes and pulled into the pits. He spent several minutes in his box as his team adjusted the front end of his KTM. It was not until his last lap, in the final seconds of the session, that Fenati was able to improve, setting a 2’06.131 to claim pole.
The Italian’s previous pole came in the Japanese GP of 2015, Fenati finishing a lowly 28th there. Fenati has developed a reputation as a charger; frequently cutting through the field to end on the podium but admits he needs to improve his performance when starting from the front. Only once has Fenati taken to the podium in Qatar, in 2012 when he was second on his World Championship debut. There’s little doubt that the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar will be a thrilling battle, the Moto3™ race almost always coming down to who can utilise the slipstream the best in the final drag to line.
Romano Fenati: “Was difficult in the start of the practice because the asphalt was a little bit dirty from yesterday. In the start we tried to do a little bit of strategy with my teammates. It was difficult and I had some problems with the front and I waited in the box for a while to make adjustments. In the last part I make a good lap time in the last lap so I’m happy and my team did a great job. Always difficult, but for tomorrow for me, it’s a difficult race as we’re a big group and all the riders are very fast. Maybe it’s difficult!”
