Marquez: “We haven’t had a winter test here to count on”

After a sensational third place finish in Qatar, Marc Marquez prepares himself for a repeat podium challenge in Argentina.

Few thought the Repsol Honda Team would be able to finish on the podium in Qatar after a disastrous start to the week, but Marc Marquez proved he can never be ruled out and fought to third. Hard work by his team saw Marquez’s fortunes turned around late in the weekend and allowed the Spaniard to battle for the podium. The ability to do so was largely due to the three-day test in Qatar before the race, his team having a plethora of data to fall back on. With confidence high, Marquez hopes to repeat his strong results at Gran Premio Motul de la República Argentina and continue improving his RC213V.

The record of Marc Marquez at Termas de Rio Hondo is astoundingly mixed: in 2014 he won but in 2015 he crashed and failed to finish. Unlike in Qatar, Marquez and his crew will not have testing data to fall back on in Argentina and much of the data from 2014 and 2015 may no longer be as relevant due to new tyres and electronics. Heading into the weekend, Marquez himself is unsure of what he can do and will assess the situation once out on track for FP1 on Friday.

Marc Marquez: “We come to Argentina in a positive mood after achieving a third-place finish in Qatar, a result that wasn’t really predictable before the start of the season. We worked very hard and very well with Honda and with the team over the weekend, and on race day I was able to push as hard as is currently possible. Of course we haven’t had a winter test here to count on and we’ll have to see if the setup we found in Qatar will also work here. That would be a good step forward for us, generally speaking, and we could even aim for a little bit better result on Sunday. Of course it will be a question mark until Friday but all in all, Argentina is a circuit that I like. We’ve always been fast here, so I feel positive for the weekend.”
