Hernandez: “I have to stay inside the top 12”

Ahead of his ‘home’ Grand Prix, Yonny Hernandez spoke to motogp.com about the challenges of 2016 and racing in South America.

How is work with your new team progressing?
“With the new team I feel the support because I have a really good crew chief and it’s the same bike so that’s not too big of a change. The change is inside the team, it’s a Spanish team with some people I know from the races, so I’m happy to be here in the Aspar team and hopefully make a good season this year.”

What are the strengths of bike?
“The strong point this year is that it’s a bike I know well, the engine is very fast. It’s a bike I know the setup well for as I have lots of experience and I think this is strong.”

How are you finding the new Michelin tyres?
“It’s difficult to explain now, the front tyre is the most difficult thing. You can put the same tyre with the same specification but sometimes it looks different! It’s strange, but I think Michelin need some more time. But the improvement from Malaysia to now is big. I hope that during the season Michelin make a really good job to give us good tyres with some more feeling and some less crashes.”

What are your goals for the 2016 season?
“My objective is to stay inside the top ten or twelve and I have a bike for that. We need to fight all year to stay inside the top 12, top 10 is a good thing and if it’s more, perfect! If it’s less then I have to stay inside the top 12.”

One of your most memorable moments was when you bike burst into flames at the Argentina GP, can you look back and laugh at it?
“It is funny now, but in the moment I was really scared when I looked down and saw the bike and the flames. It was crazy.”

Finally, what’s it like racing in front of your ‘home’ crowd?
“It’s a good weekend, it’s like racing at home. It’s a special track because I have a lot of fans there and a lot of people supporting me. It’s really nice and I hope one day we can ride in Colombia but for now we ride in Argentina and it’s the closest race so I’m happy to ride there.”
