Wishing to put Qatar behind, Johann Zarco begins the Gran Premio Motul de la República Argentina with a furious charge on Friday.
Topping both Free Practice 1 and Free Practice 2, Johann Zarco showed that his 12th place finish in Qatar was merely a fluke. The Ajo Motorsport rider was as strong as ever at a circuit he loves, leading the first session by 0.319s and maintain a 0.190s advantage in the second session. Free Practice 2 saw him produce his best time, a 1’44.593. Zarco also holds the pole lap record in Argentina, a 1’42.809, the Frenchman unable to get any closer due to the condition of the circuit. Fortunately it was the same for all riders in the Moto2™ World Championship.
Zarco was one of just six riders to set a time in the 1’44s, the Frenchman able to set eight laps in the 1’44 range in FP2. His closest rivals managed three 1’44 laps at most, the defending World Champion already looking like a race favourite. But anything could still happen, especially with heavy rainfall predicted.
Johann Zarco: “I'm happy with this first day in Argentina. It is very good to finish as the fastest rider of the day; it is important for confidence and to make sure we are on the right track with the setup. After the mistake in Qatar, I have come to this circuit that I like lot and I am very focused on doing well. Overall the day went very well, although it was very hot compared to last year and that prevented us from being as fast. We have to stay calm, improve our times tomorrow and feel even more comfortable riding in order to get as prepared as possible for the race."

#JM43 on near miss: “He braked late, I thought I was okay but he had more stopping power and we touched. I’m glad I didn’t clean him up!”
