Espargaro: “We are building-up our own knowledge”

Back to Europe and back to riding with confidence for Aleix Espargaro after a strong weekend and test in America.

The first two rounds of the 2016 MotoGP™ World Championship did not go to plan for Aleix Espargaro as he struggled to find his feet on the Suzuki with the new technical rules in place. But the Grand Prix of The Americas offered a change as Espargaro and his crew made significant progress and restored much of his lost confidence as he raced to fifth. Due to their concessions, Team Suzuki Ecstar have unlimited private testing and in Austin the team stayed behind for an extra day to assess various parts. A major area of focusing was comparing the 2016 GSX-RR frame to the 2015 frame. In the opening three rounds the 2015 model had been favoured but with more time to experiment, Espargaro found that the 2016 frame may not have been as bad as he first thought. In fact both he and Maverick Viñales were a little disappointed they hadn't run it during the race.

With extra knowledge in hand, Espargaro and Team Suzuki Ecstar arrive in Jerez for the Gran Premio Red Bull de España out to make amends for the first two races. Despite scoring points in all three, two 11th place finishes in not where the eldest Espargaro wants to be in each race and Austin proved both he and the Suzuki are capable of a lot more. Each time Aleix Espargaro has raced at Jerez in the premier class he has scored points, twice finishing seventh. On paper the Andalusia track should suit the Suzuki with a tighter layout than the previous three circuits on the calendar.

Aleix Espargaro: “Jerez is a nice track and I think it may suit our GSX-RR’s characteristics. After a very bad start to the season, we have made huge steps forward, we still have a lot of work to do but it is important that we have made progress. At Austin my confidence in the race was positive, and finally with the private test we could verify some ideas we had and finally got some very important information about the direction to take. We are building-up our own knowledge all the time and for sure this will become a very important issue for any of the next races. I am aware that the technical package is performing, we just need to better-finalise the set-up and the machine’s configuration, and then the results will come.”
