Folger: “Sam had an incredible pace”

A determined Jonas Folger stuck to the back of Sam Lowes for as long as he could to take second in the Spanish GP.

Storming off the line, Jonas Folger grabbed the lead of the Moto2™ World Championship race into the first corner at the Gran Premio Red Bull de España. He’d maintain his lead for the first lap, doing all he could to hold off Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) but before the race had even begun Folger knew Lowes had the advantage over race distance. On lap two Lowes got past and Folger tried to stay with him to open up an advantage over Alex Rins (Paginas Amarillas HP 40). For two thirds of the race, Folger was able to stick with the Brit before his tyres began to drop off and he was forced to ease his pace and let Lowes escape. The Dynavolt Intact GP rider’s efforts were good enough to comfortably take second place and his best result of 2016.

Second in the race sees Folger head to France for round five with 47 points and in fifth overall. The Le Mans circuit holds a special place in Folger’s heart, as it was where he took his first ever podium finish back in 2006. Since joining the Moto2™ class in 2014, Folger has had a best finish of sixth at the French track, failing to finish in the 2015 race.

Jonas Folger: “I'm very happy about the second place today! We knew before already that Sam had an incredible pace. It was really hard and tough for me to follow him. I just tried not to lose too much time, but at the end he was a little bit faster when the tyre was dropping. But anyway, we did a very good job over the weekend and we managed to take many points. We are all looking forward to Le Mans now. I have some good memories to this track. I did my first podium at Le Mans in 2009 and also I did a pole position in 2014. It's a track that I like quite a lot. We have a good bike at the moment and it can be a good weekend there.”
