Meet the Wildcards: French Connection

Meet the Wildcards: French Connection

Pizzoli and Boulom return to the World Championship while a wild American comes over to see what he can do in Moto2™.

The Daytona 200 is one of, if not the most, prestigious races in America and once drew in riders from around the world. In recent years Danny Eslick has been the man to beat at Daytona, winning the 200-mile race in 2014 and 2015. Like many American racers, Eslick got his start racing Flat Track before taking to the roads at age 17. At age 32 he took his first title in the AMA Daytona SportBike class aboard a Buell. His experience on 600cc bikes will be vital as he makes his World Championship debut filling in for the injured Efren Vazquez aboard the JPMoto Malaysia Suter in Moto2™.  Eslick’s debut also sees the welcome return of an American to the World Championship.

Eslick is not the first Daytona 200 winner to run in Grands Prix, Giacomo Agostini, Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey, Kevin Schwantz and Nicky Hayden all won at least once. Josh Herrin is the most recent Daytona winner to venture over to the world stage, competing in the Moto2™ World Championship with Caterham Suter in 2014.

Once more Enzo Boulom and Davide Pizzoli will run in the World Championship with the Procercasa – 42 Motorsport team. The pair will have an action packed weekend, as they will compete in the FIM CEV Repsol Moto3™ Junior World Championship, run alongside the World Championship at the French GP.

Both riders had a difficult weekend in Jerez with a number of crashes during practice. But the pair were able to remain upright in the race and gain valuable experience with Pizzoli ending 20th and Boulom 22nd. Extra track time from the Junior World Championship will no doubt help them greatly and as a French rider, Boulom is especially eager to impress.
