Fenati: “I made a big overtake”

Fenati: “I made a big overtake”

Romano Fenati was back on the podium in France but missed victory after a strong last lap from his rival.

Starting in fifth, Romano Fenati was immediately with the leading riders as he attached himself to Moto3™ World Championship leader Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo). Each took their turn at leading the French GP but neither was able to break away, Fenati was able to close down any gap through the first sector where he was clearly stronger than Binder. As the laps ticked down it looked certain an intense last lap would be had, Fenati’s Sky Racing Team VR46 crew warning him that Binder would attack at Turn 11 via his pitboard. Attack at Turn 11 is exactly what the South African did, passing Fenati and not allowing him past. Every corner saw the Italian hunt for a way through but he was unable to do so, settling for second place and his second podium of the season. 0.099s split them in the race but now Fenati is 35 points behind Binder, having only closed the gap to Jorge Navarro (Estrella Galicia 0,0).

Fortunately for Fenati and his legion of Italian fans, round six is held at Mugello in Italy where he'll home for some home ground advantage. Not only is it Fenati’s home race, but he has also had great success there with a win in 2014 and two further podiums. Few will forget 2012 when Fenati raced around on the Warm Up lap only to sit with arms folded on the line, waiting for the other riders to catch up.

Romano Fenati: “Yes it was an intense race. The start was very good and in the first part of the race I made a big overtake. Was important. I kept my rhythm and in the last two laps Brad and Navarro were very strong so second place is good for the championship standing. Now we’ll see in Mugello, our home race, and one I like. A lot of fans in Mugello, it’s a beautiful race!”
