First there was one, now there are two: Brad Binder’s World Championship victories keep growing as he hits the form of his life.
Twice Brad Binder has claimed victory in the lightweight class, each win emerging from very different circumstances. In Le Mans the South African won a race long battle with Romano Fenati (SKY Racing Team VR46) to take his second victory of 2016. Mugello is one of Binder’s favourite tracks and he’s out to continue the Red Bull KTM Ajo team’s fine record at the circuit. From the last three Italian GPs, two winners have been on Red Bull KTM Ajo machinery with Luis Salom winning in 2013 and Miguel Oliveira winning in 2015. With a 24-point lead in the Moto3™ World Championship, Binder has a comfortable margin over Jorge Navarro (Estrella Galicia 0,0) but with a score of hungry Italians out for home glory, there’s no chance to rest. 2015’s Italian GP not only saw Oliveira take victory, but also saw Binder set a new lap record on his way to tenth position. As with so many Moto3™ races before, slipstreaming on the final lap could decide the race, as it did in Qatar.
Brad Binder: “Mugello is my favourite track on the calendar. It is a spectacular place, but I think it is also a favourite for many other riders. After the last few races I feel very good on the KTM; we have found an incredible setup after some great work from my team, so we will try to go for another victory. We are strong and the overall standings are looking good for us at the moment, but we are only five races into the season and so the important thing is not so much getting victories as always placing on the podium."
