Hard work continues in the intermediate class as good data is gathered ahead of Qualifying with Lowes fastest from Zarco and Nakagami.
Temperatures continued to creep up as the sun beat down on the Mugello circuit, Moto2™ World Championship riders filtering out onto track for Free Practice 3. Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) immediately started pushing and put in a sequence of 1’52s. The Brit’s early run would see him go unchallenged for the entirety of the session, his 1’52.382 just edging out his rivals.
A late lap from Johann Zarco (Ajo Motorsport) saw the Frenchman end the session in second, 0.059s back on Lowes. He’s showing none of the issues that plagued him at home in France and is looking dangerous for Sunday’s race.
Like Zarco, Takaaki Nakagami (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) put in a late charge to secure third in the session. As is always the case in the Moto2™ World Championship, times were wonderfully close as 0.141s split the three fastest riders of the session.
Danny Kent (Leopard Racing) had struggled on Friday with a flu, but a good night’s rest, and a helpful slipstream from Luis Salom (SAG Team), saw the Brit set a 1’52.630 for fourth. Behind the Brit was Simone Corsi (Speed Up Racing) was the leading Italian in fifth place and just over a quarter of a second off the fastest lap.
Lorenzo Baldassarri (Forward Team), Franco Morbidelli (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Mac VDS), Sandro Cortese (Dynavolt Intact GP), Julian Simon and Alex Marquez (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Mac VDS) made up the top ten.
Championship leader Alex Rins (Paginas Amarillas HP 40) ended in 12th with Jonas Folger’s (Dynavolt Intact GP) difficulties continuing as the German was 14th.
Xavi Vierge (Tech 3 Racing) was the only faller in the session, coming off at Turn 5. He was unharmed in the fall but unable to return to track.
Qualifying for the intermediate class will be the last on track action of Saturday, starting at 15:05 Local Time.
