Baldassarri breaks lap record ahead of qualifying

The Italian set a blistering pace to lay down the gauntlet on Saturday morning

Lorenzo Baldassarri (Pons HP40) is the man to beat in Moto2™ ahead of qualifying at the Gran Premio Red Bull de España, going a full second quicker than he did on Friday to set a new lap record in FP3 on the newly resurfaced Jerez track. Jorge Navarro (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) was the Italian's nearest challenger in second after a fantastic morning session, with Mattia Pasini (Italtrans Racing Team) rounding out the provisional front row, 0.025 back of Navarro.

Sam Lowes (Swiss Innovative Investors) continued his good weekend, taking the checkered flag in P4, with Friday’s quickest man Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) rounding out the top five. The Spaniard crashed late on in the session at Turn 6 whilst on a quick lap, however he was able to remount and continue.

Steven Odendaal (NTS RW Racing GP) also crashed at Turn 6 earlier on in FP3, rider ok. Sixth place Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) had a minor technical problem midway through the session, however he too was able to quickly continue after pushing his KTM back down pitlane.

Top rookie was once again Romano Fenati (Marinelli Snipers Team), building on a very positive Friday – he’s seventh quickest heading into qualifying.
