Viñales and Rossi lead the way in FP1

A perfect start to the British GP for the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP riders as they head Dovi on Friday morning

2016 winner Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) topped the timesheets in FP1 at the GoPro British Grand Prix, setting a 2:02.073 to beat teammate Valentino Rossi by 0.189 seconds as the YZR-M1s made a perfect start to their weekend at Silverstone, with Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso third – 0.001 behind Rossi.

Home hero Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) was fourth quickest, 0.328 behind Viñales’ benchmark, with Jack Miller (Alma Pramac Racing) finding a bit of form to round out the top five on his Ducati – 0.900 off the top spot.

After a visit from the International Space Station on Friday, gravity got the better of Championship leader Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) in the session as he spectacularly attempted to save his crash at Turn 16, but it was to no avail – rider ok.

Aprilia Racing Team Gresini’s Aleix Espargaro had a mechanical issue midway through the session, the Spaniard though was able to get back out on his second bike.

FP2 is coming up at 14:05 local time (GMT +1), can the Yamahas continue their brilliant start to the weekend?
