Poggiali starts title defence by claiming provisional pole

World Champion, Manuel Poggiali begun the defence of his 125cc title by taking provisional pole in the first official practice session of the new season. The Gilera rider finished a little over two tenths of a second ahead of Daniel Pedrosa, with Gino Borsoi and Jaroslav Hules claiming third and fourth spots respectively.

The fight for provisional pole intensified during the last ten minutes of the session, when the lead almost constantly changed hands. One of the main protagonists in these changes was Frenchman, Arnaud Vincent, who eventually finished fifth, just under half a second behind Poggiali. Cecchinello, Azuma and Ueda completed a second row of the grid, packed by veterans of the class.

By contrast, it proved to be the youngsters who were the main fallers in the first qualifying session, with Chaz Davies, Mattia Angeloni and Michel Fabrizio all hitting the deck. Last year´s runner-up, Youichi Ui, ended up fourteenth after having fallen in this morning´s free practice session.
