Elias looking forward to the next step of his 250 education in South Africa

Toni Elias began his 250 career with a points-scoring ride at Suzuka last weekend after stepping up from the 125 class for 2002. Here he tells motograndprix.com of his feelings after one race and looks forward to round two in South Africa.

`I am quite happy with the way things went in Suzuka. I lapped in the positions I expected to be lapping in and it was another step forward in my first season on a 250. I was happy with the pace I was setting because any faster would have been a bit dangerous and any slower wouldn´t have been much fun. In the dry I was pretty quick so it´s a shame it rained for the race because I had never lapped on a 250 in the wet and I had to learn quickly. The first 5 laps were very nerve-wracking but after that I set my sights on finishing the race and to take 11th spot was very pleasing.

I have changed my training routine slightly from when I was riding a 125. Obviously the 250 is both heavier and more powerful so I have had to step up my weights training to improve my upper body strength. I prefer not to spend too much time in the gym though and spend as much time as I can on two wheels, riding supermotard or motocross. Last weekend I went to see the MX Grand Prix of Spain at Bellpuig and really enjoyed myself. The three races were all spectacular but I have to say that I did not feel the urge to be out there dicing with those guys. My father was a motocross rider but I prefer to watch!

Next up is South Africa and I´m heading there with the same mentality as Japan – just finish the race! I have yet to actually race the 250 in dry conditions so hopefully the rain will stay off at Welkom and I can learn how to handle the bike with different levels of fuel load and tyre grip. It is probably an easier circuit than Suzuka but that means the racing will be a lot closer. It can be very slippery so tyre choice will be very important.

This is the first year I have started with points on the board after one race so I have to be happy with the way things have progressed. I have completed the first step but there are many more to go!
