Cecchinello triumphs after late Poggiali drama

Lucio Cecchinello opened his season´s account in Jerez with victory built on a strong performance in the second half of the race, and confirmed in the final two laps which were marked by the attack of Maunel Poggiali. The San Marino rider was fastest off the starting grid, after pole rider Pablo Nieto got a bad start, and later crashed out on the ninth lap trying to recover ground.

A breakaway group at the head of the field quickly formed featuring Poggiali, Jenkner, Cecchinello, De Angelis, Vincent and Pedrosa, though the Spaniard slowly dropped back due to the problems he was experiencing with his wrist after his fall yesterday. Cecchinello took over at the front nine laps from the end, replacing his team-mate Alex de Angelis.

On the penultimate lap Poggiali launched his attack on the two Safilo Oxydo riders, but he recklessly touched de Angelis causing him to fall. Coming out of the last corner, the Gilera rider tried to get on the gas early to pass the Cecchinello´s Aprilia, but fell and got up to come in tenth. Cecchinello took the victory, and was followed home by Vincent and Jenkner. Pedrosa was fourth, and young Finn Mika Kallio fifth ahead of Ui. Vincent now leads the World Championship by 18 points from Poggiali.
