Rossi takes second win of the season as Kato comes home second

Valentino Rossi took his second win of the season, and the third for the Honda RC211V 4-stroke prototype, in a race in which the World Champion was forced to come through the field. On the second lap the Italian was hit by Roberts and had to battle not to fall, as Barros set the early place. Ukawa then took over at the front, as Kato made his move towards the head of the field with Capirossi. Max Biaggi was shown the black flag after edging forward on the starting grid, and then not stopping for the subsequent stop and go penalty.

Rossi moved into first position on lap 17, and left Ukawa behind to battle it out with Kato, Barros and Capirossi. Behind them Carlos Checa and Norick Abe contested sixth place, but the Spaniard´s bike failed on the final lap.

Rossi lapped on his own out for the final part of the race, while Kato secured second place, leaving Ukawa and Capirossi to an exciting struggle for the final podium spot. After numerous passes the Japanese rider held off the Italian, as West Honda Pons team-mate Barros ended fifth. Rossi now leads the championship by 29 points from Ukawa.
