Sylvain Guintoli: The forgotten man of the Gauloises Yamaha Tech 3 team

After spending a season competing in the 250cc championship for the Equipe de France team, Sylvain Guintoli accepted the opportunity to join up with the Gauloises Yamaha Tech 3 outfit this term as their third rider. The 19 year-old from Romans, near Lyon, now has the chance to gain invaluable experience aboard the YZR500 at the European World Championship circuits, and his new team have a intense schedule lined up for him.

When the majority of MotoGP teams had left the circuit of Jerez after the race there, Guintoli began his first testing session since the pre-season. ´We tested quite a lot of things, and I was able to get to know the circuit here in Jerez aboard a 500´, he explained. ´Everything went well, apart from a fall at the end of the day, and we were able to lap in really excellent conditions´.

Present at Suzuka and Welkom as reserve rider, Sylvain has been forced to kick his heels somewhat before riding the number 50 Yamaha. ´Things worked very well from the very first winter test and we are following the planned programme. I have had a pretty quiet time - I haven´t ridden for a month and a half because we can only test in Europe. Such long periods feel a little strange but I am happy to be back testing now.´

The youngster has taken the step from Grand Prix rider to back-up without any problems, conscious of the benefits to be gained from the experience. When asked about his new life away from competitive racing, Guintoli is sure he made the right choice: `It was clear from the start. I was aware of the advantages and inconveniences of the agreement. Of course it is not easy and you want to be out there competing, but I know that I can make use of this opportunity to learn. I made a difficult choice but I stand by it completely´.
