Battaini claims provisional pole after rain-affected session

The rain came down in Le Mans to affect the first 250 qualifying session. After beginning in dry conditions, the heavens opened just nine minutes into the session causing a strange set of results as only 9 riders in the class qualified, as the other 20 remained over 107% outside the pole time, and thus did not qualify.

Battaini, Rolfo , Locatelli, De Puniet, Debón, Alzamora, Stoner, Van del Bosch and Fonsi Nieto all completed three laps by the time the rain began to fall, and were the only riders to qualify thanks to their times in the dry. When the rain started to fall in earnest, most riders opted to stay in their boxes, although David Checa, Porto and Melandri attempted to improve their times in case the track dried out. However the rain infact began to fall harder, and the riders who went out in the final minutes did so really to work on their bike set-ups for wet conditions rather than for times.

Emilio Alzamora suffered a fall at the end of the session, although without serious consequences. Now the majority of the quarter-litre competitors will be waiting on tomorrow´s weather forecast.
