Fonsi confirms rich vein of form with second pole of the season

Fonsi Nieto confirmed the recent rich vein of form which had taken him to the top of the provisional championship standings, by posting his second pole of the season in Le Mans. The Spanish rider moved into pole position with just five minutes of the session remaining, and in doing so put enough distance between himself and his rivals to ensure that his Aprilia would start from first spot tomorrow.

Frenchman Randy De Puniet, who also occupied first position during the session, twice fell in the final minutes in trying to better Nieto´s time. In the end he finished four tenths behind the Spaniard, but ahead of Roberto Locatelli and Marco Melandri who denied Toni Elias his first appearance on a 250 front row right at the death.

Franco Battaini, after claiming provisional pole yesterday, led the session at the beginning, and also 15 minutes from the end, but eventually qualified sixth ahead of young Aussie Casey Stoner who once again demonstrated his undoubted potential and speed at this level. Haruchika Aoki completed the second row line-up.
