- With just 2.215 seconds covering all the qualifiers this is the closest ever grid seen in the premier class in the 53-year history of motorcycle Grand Prix racing. The first four races of the year have been the closest four grids ever in the top-class of Grand Prix racing.
- This is the first all four-stroke front row in the new MotoGP class.
- Carlos Checa's second place on the grid equals his best ever qualifying result on a Yamaha, obtained last year at Le Mans.
- Max Biaggi's third place on the grid is his best qualifying result of the year.
- Jeremy McWilliams' sixth place on the grid is his best qualifying result of 2002, and the best for the Proton KR machine in the new MotoGP class.
- Loris Capirossi starts from his lowest grid position since he started the German GP last year from 7th on the Grid. If Capirossi finishes either first or second he will become only the 5th rider ever to score a career total of more than 2000 points in all solo classes of Grand Prix racing.
- Regis Laconi's 14th place on the grid is the best qualifying result for the new Aprilia four-stroke machine.
