Checa claims provisional pole ahead of the Italian riders

Carlos Checa began the Gran Premio Cinzano D´Italia in the same vein as he did the Polini Grand Prix de France two weeks ago, as he took provisional pole ahead of Biaggi, Rossi and Capirossi who once again fought out an all Italian battle. Checa set a lap time which was some three tenths of a second better than the pole record set here by Tetsuya Harada in 1999.

The Spanish rider moved into top spot after some 22 minutes, taking over from Kenny Roberts who had been the first leader of the day. Rossi and then Biaggi moved ahead of Checa a further 22 minutes later. In the final minutes however, the Spaniard left the pits to recapture first position, and he did so right at the death after an electrifying final minute which saw Rossi go top with 48 seconds remaining, and then Biaggi top him just 14 seconds later. The provisional front row of the grid is completed by Capirossi, who was half a second down on Checa.

Ukawa qualified fifth fastest ahead of Roberts, while the surprise of the day came in the shape of John Hopkins in seventh. Laconi continued to improve on the ever-developing Aprilia by taking twelveth spot. Both Gibernau and Kato suffered falls in the session, though without serious consequences.
