Melandri steals provisional pole after excellent performance from Porto

Marco Melandri took provisional pole at the death in the quarter-litre class, in a session in which Argentine Sebastian Porto was the most remarkable protagonist on his Yamaha, after the Italian had himself made a bright start to proceedings.

Porto moved to the top of the time sheets half an hour from the end of the session, but his advantage lasted just fourteen seconds before Roberto Locatelli bettered him. It seemed that the Italian would keep pole, but Porto reclaimed first position fifteen seconds from the end. However Melandri was still on a quick lap, and on crossing the line did just enough to take the prize of provisional pole from the Argentine.

Between Melandri and Locatelli, who finished third, there was less than two tenths of a second, whilst Battaini in fourth was three tenths behind pole. Championship leader Fonsi Nieto came home fifth, some seven tenths down, and behind him were De Puniet, Elias, Debon and Alzamora.
