Battaini secures third pole of the season as Porto shines

Italian rider Franco Battaini took his third pole of the year after a session in which provisional pole holder Marco Melandri slipped to fifth position after struggling to improve his mark of yesterday. Battaini moved to the top of the time sheets with six minutes remaining, whilst Sebastian Porto produced confirmation of his excellent form during the weekend so far with another demonstration of his progress aboard the Yamaha. Yuzy complemented the work of Porto by qualifying seventh.

Locatelli and Melandri had been third and fourth respectively until the final minutes, but the late charges of team-mates Toni Elias and Fonsi Nieto surpassed them. For Elias, it was his best qualifying result since his move into the quarter-litre class. In the dying moments, Melandri bettered his time of yesterday but was unable to make any progress up the order.

Young Australian Casey Stoner did not take part in the session, and will miss tomorrow´s race due to injury.
