Rossi posts extraordinary time to take pole in Mugello

Valentino Rossi stormed back in the second half of the final qualifying session with a display of immense speed, knocking over a second off the existing pole record set by Harada in 1999, and in doing so securing his fifth pole of the season. The World Champion has now taken every pole on offer so far this year.

The session started in unspectacular fashion, and in the first half hour only Olivier Jacque was able to better his time of yesterday. The Frenchman produced an excellent display which saw him eventually finish sixth, ahead of Ukawa who set a new record speed of 324.5 kmph. Carlos Checa, who was by the finish the only rider not to improve his time today, maintained his provisional pole until three minutes from the end, when Biaggi surpassed him. However, the Roman´s joy was shortlived as Rossi posted his incredible lap just before the chequered flag. Between Rossi and Biaggi there was over half a second of difference.

Loris Capirossi will complete tomorrow´s front line, whilst Laconi will line up in fifth after producing his best qualifying finish this season. The Aprilia rider improved his times a lot in the final minutes of what was an intense session as all the riders pushed hard.
