Melandri races to his second win of the year in home GP

Marco Melandri took his second triumph of the year in a race dominated by Italian riders, but notable also for the late charge of Championship leader Fonsi Nieto who snatched a podium place at the last. Melandri emerged as the early race leader, followed by Toni Elias who once again demonstrated his growing confidence in the quarter-litre class. The young Spaniard finished fourth, after being overtaken by team-mate Nieto on the last lap.

At the head of the field, Melandri, Locatelli and Battaini regularly swapped places whilst Elias and De Puniet were just over a second behind the Italian trio. Fonsi began to make his charge halfway through, and was lapping over a second quicker than those at the front by the final laps. With just two laps left, the battle for victory was more or less decided as Battaini and Locatelli touched leaving Melandri to pull away sufficiently to claim the win from Locatelli and Fonsi. Battaini went off the track after the incident with Locatelli, but got back on to finish sixth behind Elias and De Puniet.

In the provisional World Championship standings, Fonsi has a fifteen point lead over Melandri, and is a further ten clear of Rolfo. Locatelli is 30 points behind the Spaniard.
