Poggiali takes victory in close fought race in Mugello

Manuel Poggiali took the honours in the 125 class of the Gran Premio Cinzano D´Italia, in a race that wasn´t decided until the final lap and was fought out by a group of sixteen riders, who by halfway were only separated by two and a half seconds. At the head of the field places changed hands constantly. Pedros, Poggiali, De Angelis, Jenkner, Cecchinello, Ui and Pablo Nieto all had spells at the front.

The result eventually began to take shape in the last few laps. Four from the end, Pablo Nieto and Daniel Pedrosa began to make their way towards the front, whilst Cecchinello, De Angelis and Jenkner lost places, and Ui remained waiting to pounce. World Champion Poggiali never moved out of the top spots, and on the final lap he moved ahead of Nieto which proved decisive. Pedrosa seemed to have third secured, but was taken on the final straight by Ui, who also got past Nieto on the line.

Frenchman Arnaud Vincent got away to a bad start and, despite launching an excellent recovery, ended up ninth behind Jenkner. In the provisional standings, Poggiali has taken over at the top by one point from Vincent. Cecchinello is third 19 points behind the San Marino rider.
