Alex Hofmann looking forward to the biggest challenge of his life

It has been a strange few weeks for Alex Hofmann. The former 250cc German Champion has spent the majority of this year kicking his heels after failing to seal a ride in the half-litre class despite finishing the 2001 World Championship in twelfth position. However, last week he received a call from Red Bull Yamaha WCM team boss Peter Clifford, who invited him to private tests in Holland as a replacement for the injured Jean-Michel Bayle.

`I was riding BMX at home when I got a phone call from Peter Clifford asking me if I wanted to test the Red Bull Yamaha, and I told him I would have to think about it for five seconds,´ joked the German. `Seriously though, it was the biggest opportunity of my life so far and I went straight out to Assen for a day of testing. I got on quite well with the bike and I have to say it was the best thing I have ever done.´

With Bayle still not fit to ride, Hofmann finds himself in Barcelona, preparing to contest the Gran Premi Marlboro de Catalunya aboard the YZR500 machine. `My only experience on a 500 is that day in Assen, but I was able to slide it around a bit and left some black marks here and there. I had great fun and that is what I aim to do this weekend. It will be the biggest challenge of my life and it is also a fantastic opportunity, both for me and for German motorsport.´
