Dominant Rossi takes fifth victory of the year in Catalunya

Valentino Rossi scored another victory in the MotoGP category, and now has five wins from a possible six, his other result being a second place finish. Spaniard Carlos Checa, who led the race for the first fourteen laps, assumed the lead on the first lap although Rossi, Ukawa and Biaggi went with him. The World Champion played a waiting game behind his team-mate as Checa continued to lead from the two RC211Vs.

On the fifteenth lap Ukawa surged past Checa, and was soon followed by Rossi. From that moment the Honda riders pulled away from the Spaniard who was left in third on his own. Behind him was Biaggi, and further back Barros, Capirossi and Roberts all battled for fifth. Sete Gibernau was also in the group, but crashed out on lap seven. Capirossi went off two laps from the end allowing team-mate Barros to take fifth ahead of Roberts.

Rossi has now further extended his lead at the top of the championship standings, he now has 145 points, 48 clear of Ukawa. Capirossi is in third with 65 points, and directly behind him are Yamaha duo Biaggi and Checa who both have 56.
