Poggiali returns to the scene of his first podium finish

Manuel Poggiali this weekend returns to the circuit at which he clinched his first career podium. That moment arrived back in the 2000 season, when Poggiali came home third on his Derbi, in a race which saw Youichi Ui triumph and compatriot Noboru Ueda finish second. Fortune did not smile on the San Marinese rider in last year´s race at Assen when he fell early, but got back on to fight his way up to eighth, only to fall again on the twelveth lap.

Poggiali arrives in Holland after having made an exceptional start to the current campaign, with his fall and subsequent disqualification in Jerez the only blot in his copybook. The reigning 125 World Champion has so far taken three victories, and second and a third place this term. The stats make even more impressive reading when one considers that his last two victories, last three visits to the podium and last three poles have all come in successive races. What´s more, the Gilera rider will begin this weekend´s action with a 21 point lead over his nearest championship rival.
