Rossi snatches provisional pole at the last

Valentino Rossi claimed provisional pole in the MotoGP category, after a first qualifying session in which West Honda Pons riders Barros and Capirossi dominated for long parts. Barros was the first leader of the session, but was overtaken by his team-mate 19 minutes in. The Brazilian then returned to the top of the time sheets six minutes later, and stayed there until the action hotted up in the final minutes.

The Yamaha duo of Checa and Biaggi sat behind Barros and Capirossi in the early stages, and the Marlboro pair swapped positions with 18 minutes remaining. Valentino Rossi launched his final push with some 6 minutes left, and from that moment the top positions began to change hands with frequency.

Rossi ended up with an advantage of just 25 thousandths of a second over Biaggi, and a little over a tenth on a hard-charging Kenny Roberts. Capirossi and Barros eventually finished fourth and fifth respectively, ahead of Checa, who himself was just infront of Tetsuya Harada; the Japanese rider producing his best qualifying result of the season.
