Rossi retains pole after rain-affected second qualifying session

The weather dealt a bad hand to the riders of the MotoGP category in a strange second qualifying session which was completely affected by the rainy conditions. The session started with the track still damp after the downpour during the 125 session, and most riders covered only one lap before heading back to their boxes to wait for the circuit to dry out completely.

After 20 minutes track conditions had improved, and most riders began to put in some laps even though the times were some seven seconds down on those of yesterday. With half an hour remaining the asphalt was nearly completely dry, and the teams ready to push for grid positions, when the rain began to fall heavily again, denying the riders any chance to improve their standings. Most riders did make it back out to test in the wet conditions, but yesterday´s provisional results were never threatened.

Rossi claimed his sixth pole, of the seven available to him, this season, and was joined on the front row by Biaggi, Roberts and Capirossi. The second row will be comprised of Barros, Checa, Harada and Ukawa.
