Valentino Rossi claims his sixth victory of the season

Valentino Rossi took his fifth consecutive victory in a season in which he has now claimed six wins from the seven available, as well as a second in the other. In an exciting race at Assen, Alex Barros made an impressive return to the podium, while Carlos Checa took his second successive third place finish.

The first rider to show was Kenny Roberts who led a group of seven riders through the opening laps. On the third, Barros surged to the head of the field, as the American began to lose ground. Loris Capirossi fell on lap 4, breaking his right wrist, and Barros and Rossi began to pull away from the rest. Rossi lapped behind Barros until four laps from the end, when he stormed ahead and made his charge for victory. Ukawa and Checa pulled clear in the chase for third as Biaggi and Roberts slipped further back. At the final chicane on the last lap, Ukawa tried to pass Checa for third, but fell as the duo touched, allowing Checa to hold on to claim the remaining podium spot. Biaggi capitalised to take fourth, but Ukawa got back on to finish fifth.

Rossi had increased his lead at the top of the standings, and now has 170 points, a lead of 62 on Ukawa, and 98 over Checa who lies third.
