Capirossi consistency cut short by Assen crash

The spectacular yet ultimately calamitous departure of Loris Capirossi from the Dutch TT at Assen last week not only ruled the Italian out of action for the next two months, it also crossed him off the list of riders to have scored points in every race this season. That exclusive club now has just two members: World Championship leader Valentino Rossi and the revelation of the 2002 season, John Hopkins.

Capirossi will this week undergo further tests to discover the full extent of the double wrist fracture he sustained in Holland, but he is expected to have no movement in the joint for the next 30 days and will not be fit to return to action before the summer break. The West Honda Pons rider will then have enough time to recover before making his comeback in the Gauloises Ceske Republiky Grand Prix in Brno at the end of August.

´It is a real shame and I am very sorry for Loris because he was in a good position in the World Championship and this injury is a serious blow for him,´ lamented team owner Sito Pons. `In any case he is having a fantastic season and I am sure that when he returns he will continue to be one of the shining lights on the MotoGP grid´.
