Rossi hails Leicester Square ride-in success

Another page in the glittering career of Valentino Rossi was turned this afternoon as thousands of fans crammed into Leicester Square, London, to give him the sort of red carpet reception customarily reserved for top movie stars. The flamboyant MotoGP World Champion, currently preparing for the Cinzano British Grand Prix at Donington Park this Sunday, arrived in typical style at the centre of a fleet of magnificent Honda Goldwings manned by members of the London Fire Brigade.

Around 3,000 fans from all over Britain had flocked to Rossi´s home city and the Italian did not let them down, tirelessly signing autographs, answering questions and handing out free gifts. One lucky punter was even presented with the famous number 46 paddock scooter after winning a competition on a radio show.

`It is great to see so many British fans here – they have always been fantastic to me and I love performing for them,´ said Rossi, who defends his MotoGP World Championship lead at Donington Park this weekend. `Today has been a great success and I hope there is another one for me on Sunday. I made my first 500 victory at Donington in 2000 and won there again last year, so I would like to make it three victories with the new four stroke. The two strokes will be strong there too but hopefully it will stay dry and I will have a good chance.´

Presales for the Cinzano British Grand Prix currently stand at 35,000, the biggest ever in the circuit´s history. The interest shown in the event on British shores has been massive, with a packed press conference at the trendy Sports Café in London this morning preceding the afternoon´s hectic events. On Sunday Rossi makes his 100th Grand Prix appearance and, significantly, goes in search of win number 46.
