Poggiali snatches provisional pole position from Pedrosa

World Champion Poggiali took the provisional pole position despite Dani Pedrosa and Alex de Angelis efforts. Pedrosa had been the first leader of session, until Poggiali got ahead of him on his third lap. From then, the Spaniard and the two riders from San Marino switched positions at the top of the timesheet, with a brief spell of Azuma in the first position, 10 minutes before the end of the session.

On the 25th minute of this qualifying session, Pedrosa moved into the lead once more, with a half a second lead over the second. The Spaniard seemed able to hold his position until Manuel Poggiali late surge. The Gilera rider eventually clinched the pole position by lapping 0.3 second faster than Pedrosa.

Youichi Ui is back at the front ; he qualified in third, ahead of De Angelis and Cecchinello. The Japanese rider has fond memories at Donington, where he won two races. Vincent, Azuma and Pablo Nieto complete the second row of the provisional grid.
