Impressive figures for Marco Melandri

The quarter litre class World Championship leader, Marco Melandri, has posted impressive figures in the first nine Grands Prix of the season. Apart from the Suzuka and Jerez races where he crashed, the Aprilia rider could hardly take better results as he clinched six victories (the last five in a row) and a second place. Only Fonsi Nieto´s consistency has prevented the Italian from extending his World Championship lead beyond 25 points.

With five consecutive wins, Melandri holds a good position in the all-time statistics for the class: Hailwood and Mang have a record of nine consecutive wins, ahead of Spencer, who took six wins in a row. Ubbiali and Haas won five races consecutively, like Melandri. Last year, the dominant Daijiro Kato only managed to take four consecutive wins on his way to eleven in total.

If Melandri has proven to be very efficient in the races, he hasn't shone on the individual fastest lap basis: so far this year he has taken only one pole position and just one fastest race lap.
