David García looking forward to Honda NSR challenge

David García is this week stepping up his training programme as he prepares to replace Emilio Alzamora for the Gauloises Grand Prix Ceske Republiky. The Spaniard will step into the Fortuna Honda Gresini team to ride the Honda NSR 250 in the absence of his compatriot Alzamora, who his recovering from surgery on a hand injury.

`It is a shame that my return to the World Championship has been through an injury to Emilio, who is a great rider and a great friend´, explains the 21 year old. `Obviously the chance to ride the NSR is an opportunity and a challenge. It is a very tricky bike – nobody has just got on it and achieved good results. It was designed for Daijiro Kato and then modified later, so I assume it will be small for my physical characteristics. It is a risk because I won´t get chance to ride the bike until the Friday of the GP and I haven´t ridden a 250 since last November, but I am hopeful of getting a good result´.

This will be García´s third taste of Grand Prix, having debuted in 1999 aboard a Yamaha 250 and making further appearances the following season on an Aprilia. This year the current 250cc European Champion was employed as third rider for Proton Team KR, whilst maintaining his race appetite in the Spanish Super Sport series. `I am racing these 600cc bikes and I´ve ridden the 500cc Proton twice with pretty good results. I set the same times as McWilliams and the team were happy. So was I because I want my future to be in MotoGP´.

Garcia, who will make his race debut on the Proton in the final Grand Prix of the season at Valencia in November, added: `My physical preparation was focused on Valencia really and Brno interruprted my holidays. I am training for three hours a day doing cycling, weights and jogging.´
